There’s something Buenos Aires’ off theater does especially well: turning a singular idea into an experience you won’t find anywhere else. While major productions often rely on spectacle, independent venues draw their strength from experimentation, audience intimacy, and the freedom to take creative risks. That’s where some of the city’s most original productions come to life.

If you're looking for something different to see this month, this selection brings together some of the season’s most compelling plays. You'll find stories about memory and identity, absurdist comedies, classic works reimagined through a contemporary lens, and immersive performances where every audience member creates their own journey. Because in Buenos Aires' off theater, there’s always room for surprise—and some of the most unforgettable performances happen in the smallest venues.

1. La obra

Cast: Rami Fadel Khalaf, Alejandra Flechner, Diego Velázquez, Susana Pampín, Horacio Acosta, and Pablo Seijo. Directed by: Mariano Pensotti

Mariano Pensotti's latest creation with Grupo Marea builds a fascinating game of overlapping realities to explore how the wounds of the past continue to echo in the present. The story begins in the 1960s, when Simon Frank, a man claiming to be a Jewish survivor of the Nazi concentration camps, arrives in a small town in Buenos Aires Province and decides to rebuild his former home as the setting for a play based on his own life. What starts as a community art project gradually becomes a local phenomenon—until an unexpected revelation calls into question everything that seemed true.

Enchanted forests, exiled nobles, magical creatures, and unexpected romances are just some of the ingredients in Forever Young in My Verses, a fantasy comedy inspired by classic fairy tales and romantic stories. Everything changes when an unforeseen event disrupts life at the Duchess of Árdenas' court, forcing its inhabitants into a realm where the rules of reality seem to dissolve. Filled with spells, misunderstandings, and unlikely encounters, the play reflects on love, youth, and the desires that stay with us long after we think we've left them behind.

3. Aurelia escribe

Cast: Carolina Tejada. Directed by: Marcelo Velázquez

History often remembers Aurelia Vélez Sarsfield for her relationship with Domingo F. Sarmiento, but this play by Adriana Tursi restores her rightful place as the protagonist of her own story. Through a powerful solo performance, it portrays a woman ahead of her time—deeply engaged with politics, ideas, and the transformations shaping nineteenth-century Argentina. With a sensitive contemporary perspective, the play revisits the silences of official history and asks who was left out of the narrative—and why.

Cast: Marco Michienzi, Guadalupe Fiora, Juan Manuel Besteiro, Marian Morelli, and ensemble. Directed by: Nicolás Manasseri

Who would we be if we could erase the memories that hurt us most? That question lies at the heart of this musical, which combines theater, live music, and poetic imagery to create a deeply immersive experience. The story follows a young man who undergoes an experimental procedure to free himself from his past, only to discover that memories are not so easily erased. Blending fantasy, memory, and the desire for reinvention, the show offers an introspective journey into identity and everything that shapes who we are.

Set in the La Boca neighborhood during the 1980s, this play blends drama, humor, and psychological tension in a story driven by jealousy, frustration, and complicated relationships. 6. Amanuenses

Cast: Martín Bertani, Constanza Feldman, Juan Jimenez, and Emmanuel Palavecino. Directed by: Constanza Feldman

In an office tucked away somewhere in the twentieth century, four employees spend their days repeating mechanical tasks among piles of paperwork, typewriters, and analog objects frozen in time. Beneath the gray routine lies an absurd universe where everyday movements become a meticulously choreographed display of humor, physical skill, and creativity. This playful comedy transforms office work into a poetic performance while celebrating a material world that's rapidly disappearing: paper files, archives, and the manual gestures that once kept everything in order.

Families are full of secrets. Some sweep them under the rug; others hide them in the washing machine. Written and directed by Julio Chávez, Dirty Laundry takes a close look at the family ties that support us, unsettle us, and often define us. Through the figure of Juan José Castelli, one of the key leaders of Argentina's May Revolution, this play brings new life to a central figure in the country's struggle for liberty, equality, and popular sovereignty. Cast: Daniela Rizzo, Jonás Volman, Sang Min Lee, and Ezequiel Martelliti. Directed by: Pablo Finamore

While Argentina celebrates its 1978 World Cup victory, a very different story unfolds inside a rural estate in Buenos Aires Province. Set against the oppressive backdrop of the country's last military dictatorship, this powerful drama explores desire, violence, and power through four characters trapped inside a kitchen. With the audience surrounding the action like witnesses to an emotional autopsy, the play examines how systems of domination seep into everyday relationships until they become almost unrecognizable.

Cast: Manuela Bottale, Daniela Cabezas, Pepe Nigri, and Pablo Ottaviano. Directed by: Luis Levy

War is often told through battles, strategies, and victors. Dear Soil chooses a different perspective, focusing instead on those caught in the middle of conflict and asking what happens when absurdity becomes part of everyday life. Combining clowning, physical comedy, and an inventive mix of theatrical and audiovisual techniques, it creates a poetic world where a group of clowns confronts situations that are both hilariously ridiculous and profoundly human.
