Gujarat’s Ahmedabad has two major art dates on its calendar later this year, at a time that just happens to be ripe to escape the heat and immerse yourself in broody rumination. Both these events are, notably, second attempts at a first impression. Here's what we know so far.

September: India Art Fair EDI+IONS

Fresh off its Hyderabad debut, IAF EDI+IONS is India Art Fair's travelling satellite venture. It’s setting up shop in Ahmedabad on September 19 and 20. The venue, in Ahmedabad this time is a 20th-century Indo-Gothic and Renaissance style mansion which will trade its identity for a fortnight of contemporary art and design.

IAF’s just announced the gallery lineup for this, and many on the list are art fair veterans. Fifteen galleries are making the trip, five of them homegrown Ahmedabad names, alongside two design participants.

Who’s exhibiting?

This is still only the second edition of the experiment in taking IAF's curatorial instincts on the road, and the lineup still makes a considerable grab across the national gallery circuit: Delhi regulars Nature Morte, Vadehra Art Gallery, Shrine Empire, Threshold Art Gallery, Latitude 28 and PHOTOINK will all be present, as will Mumbai's Chatterjee & Lal and Studio Renn, and Kolkata/Mumbai's Experimenter.

Akar Prakar shows up from a New Delhi/Kolkata double address, Ashvita's brings a bit of Chennai into the mix. Mumbai-based designer Ashiesh Shah is also showing. Locally, Ahmedabad's own 079 | Stories Art Gallery, Archer Art Gallery, Iram Art, Samara Art Gallery and ZOCA get to play host on their own turf: always a slightly different energy than being the visiting act.

Beyond the booths, there's the now-standard IAFpromise of walkthroughs, conversations and ‘special events,’ details of which are still being finalised. The organisers are billing it as a chance to ‘engage and explore the rich cultural landscape’. For now: mark the dates.

When: September 19-20, 2026

October-November: Ahmedabad Cultural Week

There’s a new way to say goodbye to October in Ahmedabad, and it lasts a week. This multi-venue, multi-medium 9-day-long brain-kicker is just in its second edition, and there’s a reason we’re recommending it ahead of its announcement of this year’s full layout. Last year, they went all out in some of Ahmedabad’s best galleries with – what I’m told by folks who went last year – is a range of sensory-tickling works that will make you want to hit at least one or two spots every single day: including screenings, performances, and talks, too.

It was founded to bring together Ahmedabad’s historical landmarks, venues helped by the patronage of families from cultural foundations, and the city’s growing number of contemporary galleries. In their own words, it’s ‘purely designed for the city of Ahmedabad and its people, with an aspiration for community building.’

When: October 23-November 1

Where: Multiple venues, TBA
