York is famous for its massive York Minster cathedral, longlasting Roman walls (more than any other in the UK) and for having more pubs than days of the year. Add the many marvellous museums, shops, restaurants and natural landscapes, and you've got yourself the perfect holiday for summer, or for any season, in fact.

A place with this much quirk deserves to be paired with a stay that's just as characterful, and these York residentials have personalities in all shapes, sizes and budgets. From a shepherd's hut alongside the River Ouse to a 600-year-old Tudor joint overlooking the cathedral, all you have to do is pick your favourite.

Updated July 2026: This year, we've added a sexy-cool loft near the city centre, and a whimsical treehouse fit for adventurous solo travellers, perfect for breezy summer stays.

The master bedroom has its own lavish perk, too - a cool, copper standing bathtub.

Like living in a forest fairy tale, this tiny gem of a home in northeast York is everything you could ask for in whimsical stay. Outside, there's a lush garden and access to the main home where there's an exclusive bathroom and shower for your use only. And if you're a foodie, make sure to chat with the chef host, who will happily help with meals or any culinary needs. Basically, if hobbits lived among trees instead of mounds, it'd probably look a lot like this.

Time Out tip: The upstairs space is reached via a restored wooden ladder, so bear this in mind if you have mobility issues.
